Extra Ordinary Objects with Laila Gohar

Food artist, Laila Gohar, creates installations and pop-ups in conjunction with art, design, and fashion events. She explores food's role in society and is known for her unique food installations.

Extra Ordinary Objects are the small tools that play a significant role in our day-to-day lives at work, at home, or in the kitchen. We asked Laila Gohar to share stories about the objects she likes to have around at her studio in New York.

Resilince Bread

»This is a piece of bread, my assistant, Yukimi sewed together. I remember early in the pandemic I was at my studio with my two assistants and we were totally scared and confused about what was happening in the world. We had leftover dry bread that always reminds me of carton paper. I took it out and we started "quilting" it together—sewing little pieces and connecting them. It felt very meditative to do that at a time when the world was falling apart.«

Ceramic Sardine

»This is a ceramic Sardine my friend Hailey gave me last year. I think she got it in Portugal. I like the way it’s glazed and keep it at my studio. I look at it often.«

Pepper grinder

»This is a pepper grinder by Carl Aubock. I love his work. I was at an art fair and there was a presentation of his work by the gallerist Patrick Parrish. I picked up the pepper grinder admiring it and Patrick saw me. He turned to me and said do you like it? I said yes, it’s beautiful, and he said okay it’s yours. I was so touched by his spontaneous generosity.«

Glass cup

»I found this cup at a flea market in Paris, it’s very tiny. I’m not sure what it’s used for but I like how delicate the glass is.«
